Northern California Forensics Association Championship Brings Speech and Debate Teams Together at Butte College and Chico State

The Northern California Forensics Association (NCFA) Championship is one of the most significant tournaments in the area. This year, Butte College and Chico State teamed up to share the hosting responsibilities for the championship. The collaboration showcased both institutions' dedication to fostering the art of public speaking and debate.

Butte College played host to the National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) competition, kicking off the event on Friday, February 23. Meanwhile, Chico State took the reins on Saturday and Sunday, February 24 and 25, hosting the Lincoln Douglas Debate (LD), International Public Debate Association (IPDA), and Individual Events such as public address and oral interpretation.

Director of Forensics at Butte College, Shannan Troxel-Andreas, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, "While our portion was small, this was the first time in nearly two decades that Butte College acted as host for the NCFA.”

“This was hopefully a jumping-off point for hosting tournaments in the future, which would save us money by not traveling and bring in tens of thousands of dollars for local businesses," she added.

Butte College not only hosted, the team also earned 12 individual trophies and placed fourth overall.

The weekend drew participants from more than 20 schools across the expansive NCFA region. Butte College's Speech and Debate team showcased their talents during the Individual Events portion of the tournament on Sunday, February 25.

  • Kyle Landrum: Second Place Persuasive Speaking; Third Place Extemporaneous Speaking

  • Kayla Selvey: First Place Novice Persuasive Speaking

  • Nate Bower: Fifth Place Novice Persuasive Speaking

  • Austin Bower: Finalist After Dinner Speaking
