Butte College music student John Paul Bowers has earned the second-place award in the 2023 Music Association of California Community Colleges composition competition with his innovative piece, "Etude for Banjo and Objects."
"I think that winning this means a lot because it shows me that my composition has value and was worth all the hard work I put into it,” Bowers shared. “I am very thankful for all the great people, particularly Professor Hesam Abedini, who pushed me to get it and produce a good composition."
Bowers’ win stands as a testament to the level of talent fostered within Butte College's music program. “This is a significant accomplishment for John Paul and our department, showcasing the high level of talent and dedication among our students,” said Abedini.
Bowers enrolled at Butte College as a psychology major. After taking a digital music production class in the spring of 2023, he was reminded of his love for music-making and inspired to pursue it professionally. Bowers plans to transfer to a 4-year university after completing his studies at Butte. He hopes to earn a graduate degree and pursue a career in music composition or education.
