In recognition of his outstanding contributions to music education, Butte College instructor Ryan Heimlich was named the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) John Swain College/University Educator of the Year. This prestigious award, presented at the 2024 California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC) in Sacramento earlier this month, celebrates excellence in music education at the college and university level.
The CMEA, in an email statement, expressed their admiration for Heimlich's continuous excellence as a music educator and his dedicated service to the profession in the state. "We were impressed with your ongoing excellence as a music educator and your service to our profession in our state. The impact of your contributions is both inspiring and commendable. This award serves as a testament to your hard work, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to music education," the statement read.
In response to the accolade, Heimlich expressed his gratitude. "I am honored and grateful to be selected as the CMEA Collegiate Educator of the Year. Music education is truly a team effort, and this award is a testament to the collaborative spirit within our wonderful North State musical community," Heimlich remarked.
He continued by acknowledging the collective effort of his colleagues, the support from Butte College administration, and the exceptional qualities of his students. "I am fortunate to work with a group of music teachers from pre-K to college who are dedicated, passionate, talented, and inspirational in the work that we do," Heimlich added. "Our students are simply the best. They are unique, funny, demanding, inspiring, and supremely talented, and they constantly motivate me to improve and do better."
Heimlich expressed gratitude to colleagues, friends, administrators, and students for their unwavering support and inspiration. He also acknowledged the CMEA Board for selecting him out of many deserving educators across California. Finally, he extended a deep debt of gratitude to his family for their enduring support and patience throughout his journey in music education.
As the chair of the performing arts department and director of bands at Butte College, Heimlich directs the concert, jazz, and pop bands. In addition to his leadership roles, he teaches studio instruction and music theory. Since joining Butte College, Heimlich has reinvigorated the music department, earning him recognition as Chico Noon Rotary's Instructor of the Year in 2022.
The CMEA John Swain College/University Educator of the Year award serves as a well-deserved acknowledgment of Heimlich's outstanding achievements and dedication to music education.
